WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College went 3-for-3 at home this weekend to improve to 8-6 overall this season, 5-5 in Region X Conference play.
Coming off a 13-point loss at Catawba Valley earlier in the week, the Bulldogs welcomed Patrick Henry to the Charles Coburn Center Friday and came away with a 79-72 victory to start the three-game home stand. PCC topped Guilford Tech Saturday by a 103-95 count and avenged its loss to CVCC with a 91-73 win over the Red Hawks on Sunday.
Jaiquan Manning racked up 23 points to lead Pitt past the Patriots Friday night. The sophomore guard went 8-for-14 from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and hit all four of his free throw attempts as PCC erased a 33-32 halftime deficit with a 47-point outburst in the second half.
Guard Deonte Jones was the story for PCC in Saturday's win over the Titans. The freshman tallied 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including a 5-for-8 effort from the 3-point line.
Including Jones, four Bulldogs finished in double figures scoring against GTCC, including Andrew Abrom, who scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double, and Ikesta Johnson, who also double-doubled with 16 points and 11 boards. Antonio Freeman led PCC on the glass with 12 rebounds, and Manning had a team-high nine assists.
In Sunday's contest, it was a second-half offensive surge that ultimately powered Pitt past Catawba Valley. The Bulldogs trailed 37-33 at intermission but erupted for 58 points over the final 20 minutes of play to make good on the home stand sweep.
Jones scored a team-high 25 points for the second game in a row to propel the Pitt attack. Manning and Johnson, who went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line, scored 16 apiece, and Chris Smith came off the bench to score 12 for the Bulldogs, who connected on 48 percent (12-for-25) of their 3-point attempts for the game.
Next up for Coach Darrick Mullins' Bulldogs is a trip to Richard Bland College Thursday for a 7 p.m. tilt in Statesman Hall.
